Canada and Mexico are top U.S. trading partners. In 2024, trade between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada exceeded $900 billion, with Mexico as the largest partner and Canada second. North American supply chains are deeply integrated. In North America, supply chains are highly integrated, with manufactured goods often crossing borders between the United States, Mexico, and Canada several times during various stages of production before reaching their final form. Border communities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are deeply interconnected, with frequent cross-border travel fueling local economies, supporting businesses, and sustaining jobs through trade, tourism, and shared supply chains.
In the 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) laid the groundwork for economic integration across North America, facilitating the flow of goods, services, and investment, and setting the stage for greater collaboration; later, the U.S. – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA) built on this foundation by modernizing trade rules, further strengthening regional ties, and enhancing the global competitiveness of the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Importantly, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is now scheduled for a mandated joint review by July 2026, during which the participating countries will assess its effectiveness and make determinations about its continuation or potential modifications. President Trump has suggested that the USMCA could be revised or even canceled, with the possibility of pursuing separate bilateral agreements with Mexico and Canada instead. Replacing the trilateral framework with separate bilateral deals would alter North American trade rules and business conditions.
